Statement:
Stone Frieze: Forms of Time, 1998, a triptych, (18" x360" overall), is a deconstructed narrative, addressing the shift from randomness to transformation.
This work, done in Giverny, France during my residency in 1988, spoke as much to nature and its multiple aspects as the titles suggest:
In the Natural Garden: Monet's Eden (Panel I);
In the Civilized Garden: The Park (Panel II);
In the Stone Garden: The Landscape, Gardens as Graves/Graves as Gardens (Panel III).
Panel III led to my preoccupation with monoliths as enduring figures.
Scale and light became a crucial element in the fierceness and drama of the larger-than-life imagery.
"...I like the idea that stones are what the world is made of... I like sensibility without technique."
-Richard Long
