Statement:
Water Frieze, 1982-86, a quadriptych, a work in four panels (18" x 120" each panel, 18" x 440" overall), sets the stage for working in series. I am intrigued by the endless progression of "events" that have continuity and yet are random. Images that appear and are not connected, have no beginning and no end, are served well by a modular scheme that can be put together, like building blocks, and can as easily be taken apart. The interchangeable unfixed aspect of the format is in contradiction to the solidity and stability of the figure itself, appearing, disappearing, and reappearing in an infinity of gestures and attitudes. Water addresses that fluidity.
